SPRING 2015
SPRING 2015

In case you weren’t at the Summit, I have posted my latest edition of HERDING CATS Vers. 3.0 on my website. If you are leading a group to the Memorial this year, I think it’s a valuable guide. I have provided a number of examples for reference. The Honor Flight Network Summit was spectacular with over three hundred of my favorite

FALL PHOTOGRAPHY 2014
FALL PHOTOGRAPHY 2014

As we coast to the end of the Honor Flight Flying Season, I’ve already talked to several people who have made reservations for the Summit. Obviously, we can’t get enough Honor Flight! I photographed over one hundred Honor Flight hubs at the Memorial this year.

Dole Defines Determination
Dole Defines Determination

Senator Dole has been the center focus in national media with his five laps of ninety counties in Kansas and his return yesterday to the Capitol to lobby for the treaty called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities.

WWII Memorial: Honoring our Heroes 2014
WWII Memorial: Honoring our Heroes 2014

During that week, Boeing printed and distributed 1.6 million posters of one of my night images and the Washington Post ran 39 pages on the WWII Memorial. A productive time but no one I believe thought that the WWII Memorial would become the most popular attraction on the Washington Mall drawing 4.5-5 million people a year. Too bad they don’t have a bookstore, eh?

Tenth Anniversary of WWII Memorial!
Tenth Anniversary of WWII Memorial!

On May 24th the WWII Memorial will celebrate it’s tenth anniversary with a ceremony. Hosted by the Friends of the WWII Memorial. Tickets may still be available and you can get more information on the Friends Website. It should be a grand event (rain or shine).

Chicago Honor Flight: Precision Drill
Chicago Honor Flight: Precision Drill

Chicago Honor Flight arrived today with 93 veterans. As many of the guardians are from our elite corp of DC Volunteers, Chicago doesn’t need to fly out as many guardians. Mary Pettinato has a team of volunteers who are consistent and know the drill. Chicago’s local coordinators are Renda Overbo and Deb Stevens who make all the DC arrangements and coordinate all the volunteers.

It was quite an event kicked off with a Friday reception which included everything from swing dancers to information stations where Friends of the WWII Memorial, Women in Military Service to America and vendors

Infrared Photography: DC PHOTO BOOK
Infrared Photography: DC PHOTO BOOK

As an early adopter of digital imaging, I have had the opportunity to explore and write about the transition from film to digital. It’s been an impressive technological march.  In 2000, I wrote and illustrated a story for Lexar Media on the possibilities of simulating the look of Infrared film images using digital cameras. That […]

WWII Memorial: Veterans Day 2013
WWII Memorial: Veterans Day 2013

The WWII Memorial continues to be a source of interesting photography moments and I hope I am refining my skills as I plunge on with the project of promoting my books.  I can’t tell you how much I enjoy conversing with the many people who come to the WWII Memorial.  This has been a particularly […]

DC PHOTO BOOK IN KINDLE FORMAT

DC PHOTO BOOK is now available on the KINDLE FORMAT! The digital version includes more photographs than its print counterpart, as well as additional commentary and resources. Digital books offer more possibilites in terms of content and interactivity, and it’s been exciting to redesign for this platform.

Honor Flights at WWII Memorial!
Honor Flights at WWII Memorial!

Eleven Honor Flights descended upon the WWII Memorial and it was nice to see the fountains blasting away and the Memorial Plaza filled with veterans, guardians, tourists and everyone was shaking hands and posing for pictures.  I missed the early flights (San Diego must be on California time!) but made pictures the rest of the day.  I […]

WWII Memorial Heroes

Jewel of the Mall. Today, veterans from Chicago, Kansas and Missouri visited the WWII Memorial and had to be shielded from the many Congressman and Senators who showed up for a free photo op when the nation is shut down because of their incompetence.

WWII MEMORIAL: Veterans turned away?
WWII MEMORIAL: Veterans turned away?

This picture was taken at 3PM on Monday September 30th, 2013.   Perhaps our elected officials can get off their asses and act as volunteers for WWII Veterans visiting the Memorial. More than 950 Veterans are scheduled to see the Memorial this week with Honor Flight. Lori Turner’s Mississippi Honor Flight Group will be the first […]

Jewel of the Mall
Jewel of the Mall

As I am frequently at the WWII Memorial greeting flights or wandering the Mall to the various bookstores, I am always on the lookout for new “opportunities”. I had been quietly lusting after the crane that Hayward Baker and Clark Construction had on their building site but held little hope.

Senator Bob Dole’s 90th Birthday!
Senator Bob Dole's 90th Birthday!

Happy 90th Birthday Senator Bob Dole! Senator Robert  Dole in front of the  WWII Memorial.  He is well known for his Congressional career, his run for the presidency and for lobbying for and raising the funds to build the WWII Memorial.  He is “adored” because of his frequent visits to the WWII Memorial to greet his fellow […]

WWII Memorial: Hidden Gems
WWII Memorial: Hidden Gems

The Ceremonial Gardens are just behind and to the West of the Atlantic Pavillion. They were designed by James A. Van Sweden, the landscape architect for the Memorial. Until recently, the area always seemed either incomplete or in disrepair but today, the gardens looked perfect. It’s an overlooked and tranquil setting: a nice place to host

WWII Memorial Book on iBooks

Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is now available on the iBookstore! Its delivery was slightly delayed when we cleared our schedules to plan and install the WWII Memorial show at the Women’s Memorial. But that did allow us to feature the new show in the digital book! This digital edition contains all […]

VE DAY: WWII Memorial
VE DAY: WWII Memorial

Several hundred people gathered at the WWII Memorial today to celebrate the 68th Anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day at the WWII Memorial. In attendance were the board of Directors of Friends of the WWII Memorial, reprsentatives Karen Curcurullo and Robin Owen of the National Park Service as well as an Honor Flight from Tucson Arizona. There was a moving re-enlistment ceremony and Holocaust survivors and WWII veterans placed wreaths in front of the Wall of Stars. The rains held off and in fact the weather was quite beautiful. The Memorial is a far better place with water than without. Great credit goes to Terry and the National Park Service for getting the fountains running.

Be There or Be Square
Be There or Be Square

A show of my images at the Women in Military Service to America Memorial  on June 12, 2013 for at least six months.  I am delighted!   The museum is cradled into the main entrance of Arlington Memorial Cemetery and its beautifully lit interior is a photographer’s dream.  The opening is 6-8 PM and everyone who’s […]
