A FIRST LOOK….. WHERE DC Guestbook
A FIRST LOOK..... WHERE DC Guestbook

WHERE MAGAZINE produces the annual “Where Guestbook” which is distributed throughout DC hotels, businesses and destinations. I am delighted to have the opening ten pages in the book and the final page. Editor Jean Lawlor Cohen and Art Director Teri Samuels are responsible for the selection and design of the article. Jean and I have discussed this for several years and so I am extremely happy that it came to fruition in such a beautiful piece.

July 4th Independence Day
July 4th Independence Day

A rare view of the Independence Day fireworks from the roof of the Lincoln Memoiral. The image is featured in DC PHOTO BOOK:  An Insider’s View.  The National Mall is an amazing place and I hope you will take a few moments to visit the Women’s Memorial where my images from WWII Memorial:  Jewel of the Mall are featured.  For […]

DC PHOTO BOOK: Tidal Basin Blossoms
DC PHOTO BOOK: Tidal Basin Blossoms

The Infrared camera is an interesting little device. I don’t know if I will use it frequently but it’s nice to have some variations on a theme. I believe peak bloom will be Saturday and Sunday around the Tidal Basin while some areas like Arlington Cemetery have already begun You can see more of these images at the PHOTO LIBRARY.

WWII Memorial Exhibit at WIMSA
WWII Memorial Exhibit at WIMSA

WIMSA (WOMEN IN MILITARY SERVICE TO AMERICA) is probably the best-kept secret in Washington, DC. It is is one of the more significant yet invisible architectural triumphs in DC. It is so in perfectly attuned to the cemetery’s overall facade that it goes unnoticed. The interior of the Memorial has sweeping forty foot ceilings half of which are skylights which blow vast amounts of light into the interior, so much so that I am constantly surprised that the prints show no sign of fading

Honor Flight Book Ordering

I will not be reprinting books this year and I am working out an arrangement with Amazon to fulfill all orders come 2015 They are far more efficient and are already taking care of all single book purchases. TIDEWATER: Classic Yachts
TIDEWATER: Classic Yachts

It’s been a busy year in Washington, DC but every week, I try to get out on the L’Escargot and capture the beauty of sailing on the Chesapeake. I know exactly which photograph this will replace in the new edition of Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs. This is a classic Tartan 37 cruiser/racer. I’d guess it’s early seventies and in great shape and trim as it sails off Herrington Harbour.

WWII Memorial Book on iBooks

Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is now available on the iBookstore! This digital edition contains all […]

VE DAY: WWII Memorial
VE DAY: WWII Memorial

Several hundred people gathered at the WWII Memorial today to celebrate the 68th Anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day at the WWII Memorial. In attendance were the board of Directors of Friends of the WWII Memorial, reprsentatives Karen Curcurullo and Robin Owen of the National Park Service as well as an Honor Flight from Tucson Arizona. There was a moving re-enlistment ceremony and Holocaust survivors and WWII veterans placed wreaths in front of the Wall of Stars. The rains held off and in fact the weather was quite beautiful. The Memorial is a far better place with water than without. Great credit goes to Terry and the National Park Service for getting the fountains running.

Panning for Gold
Panning for Gold

Just when you feel you’ve taken every possible angle and image of the WWII Memorial (and I’ve made my share!), you stumble across another view.  Yesterday, we were let out of the cab at the front of the Memorial and wandered into this area overlooking the Plaza. The images are available on the studio archive […]

Pentagon Memorial
Pentagon Memorial

I have seen sketches of the new Pentagon Memorial and was not expecting the elegance and sophistication of the design.  It is truly a subtle solution for this little trafficked Memorial. We are adding photos to the DC PHOTO BOOK due out in the Fall and this will be a stunning addition. Visit before it’s […]

Michigan Honor Flight
Michigan Honor Flight

Faye Wisely was the first person I ever contacted about Honor Flight. No one was quite sure of how to go about accomplishing the task of moving all those vets. She pointed me to Earl Morse who was still working it out with Jeff Miller over the dinner table.

Kaskey Studio Site
Kaskey Studio Site

Sculptor Ray Kaskey who sculpted the the WWII Memorial elements just completed assignments for the “International Brotherhood of Teamsters” and the “International Union of Operating Engineers.”  I added twelve pages to the site and updated the “Commissions” page. I designed the site two years ago in Dreamweaver and still think it’s an elegant piece of code.

Barcelona: Visual Treats
Barcelona: Visual Treats

Barcelona was a visual feast and there was no imaging restraint possible!  I have just finished doing a preliminary edit using Lightroom.  While I haven’t had much experience with LR, i found it satisfying to take these gritty green fluorescent night shots and turn them into relatively interesting color or lack of. The choice of […]

Kilroy Was Here Commemorative Stamp
Kilroy Was Here Commemorative Stamp

I got this email from Pat Tillery who is pushing to have Kilroy put on a stamp:  “Stephen, I received your excellent book yesterday.  Thank you.  After only a glance, it thoroughly exploded an old theory of mine about photography.  Back when I worked as a civilian in Bangkok, I had a Pentax 35mm camera […]
