The incredibly thoughtful Memoirial to 9/11 is well worth a visit. The designers embuded this small parcel of ground with as much dignity and grace…
The type alterations to the Martin Luther King Memorial were just fixed n time for the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
On my regular “rounds” of the Monuments, I stopped by to see the Martin Luther King Memorial. Last year, I had the pleasure of contacting the King Foundation for the permission to use a picture for the DC PHOTO BOOK and so it is the only general DC book sold in the MLK bookstore. You can also get it […]
Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is now available on the iBookstore! Its delivery was slightly delayed when we cleared our schedules to plan and install the WWII Memorial show at the Women’s Memorial. But that did allow us to feature the new show in the digital book! This digital edition contains all […]
I will have the grood fortune to be signing the WWII MEMORIAL and DC PHOTO BOOKS this Monday April 1st (1-4 PM) and Thursday April 4th (1-4 PM) at the National Park Service Cherry Blossom Festival tent run by Eastern National. Watching the anticipation and transition on the Mall from gloomy Winter into exuberant Spring is always fascinating. I am also hoping to do a morning broadcast on WTTG/ Fox news show sometime during the week.
Just when you feel you’ve taken every possible angle and image of the WWII Memorial (and I’ve made my share!), you stumble across another view. Yesterday, we were let out of the cab at the front of the Memorial and wandered into this area overlooking the Plaza. The images are available on the studio archive […]
The Korean Memorial has been an interesting project as well. Surrounded by the Lincoln and the WWII Memorial, it’s smaller even than the Vietnam Memorial. I’ve found it the most difficult of the Memorials to photograph so far but then, I haven’t tried it just before dawn…usually a solution for any photograph.
I have seen sketches of the new Pentagon Memorial and was not expecting the elegance and sophistication of the design. It is truly a subtle solution for this little trafficked Memorial. We are adding photos to the DC PHOTO BOOK due out in the Fall and this will be a stunning addition. Visit before it’s […]
It’s been ten years since I began the WWII Memorial project and I am delighted
Chicago, Arizona, Columbia and Myrtle Beach, SC and North West Ohio Honor Flights were in town today as was Jim McLaughlin, President of Honor Flight and Susan Barr traveling with Arizona. The predicted stormy weather held off all day and other than a bit of humidity, my trip to the Memorial was absolute karma– […]
Mary Haddon of Rocky Mountain Honor Flight was at the WWII Memorial with about thirty veterans and their guardians. The weather was DC at its best and promised to continue for the weekend which is supposed to be jam-packed with flights. The veteran on the left was celebrating his 93rd birthday. You can see more […]
Sculptor Ray Kaskey who sculpted the the WWII Memorial elements just completed assignments for the “International Brotherhood of Teamsters” and the “International Union of Operating Engineers.” I added twelve pages to the site and updated the “Commissions” page. I designed the site two years ago in Dreamweaver and still think it’s an elegant piece of code.
All the Honor Flight volunteers deserve great praise, ovations and a terrific Holiday Season. Through rain, delays, departures and hot and cold days, you have all participated in an extraordianary piece of American History! Congrats! Please find the attached information to reflect totals for the 2011 Flying Season: -Veterans Flown in 2011: 18,055 -Guardians Flown in […]
VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945 from Richard Sullivan on Vimeo. This video was recently found and is represented to be VJ Day in Honolulu. Imagine the celebration…no…SEE the celebration in this short piece. We are gathering additional stills and video for our ongoing publications of “WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall.”
“WWII Memorial: Jewel of the Mall” is out of stock for quantity purchases until January/February 2009. I have kept a few hundred to fulfill signed orders for the holidays. The new edition will have a few new pictures, sewn seams for a better binding and better quality paper stock. Prints from the book are always available and the site will […]
Towards the opening days of the World War II Memorial, much of the stone work was finished and the fountains were being tuned. The eagles were being welded together and you could sit up amongst them on a scaffold. I spent almost two weeks photographing the welding which was very carefully done by Apex Piping. All […]
If you have some extra time before your next trip to the Memorial, take a visit to sculptor Ray Kaskey’s website. Ray is without doubt the most “monumental” sculptor on the planet today and the articles on his website detail some interesting aspects of his career. “Near saves” when the town of Portland raised a few […]
Wow!! What a guy…. He joined the Navy in Brooklyn because they had a basketball team and ended up heading overseas on a destroyer which left Pearl Harbor just two weeks before the December 7th attack. He was then assigned to PBY (submarine hunter) airplane in Brazil for the remainder of the war. He had […]
Actually one of the great parts of the WWII Memorial Project was watching this massive architectural ornament being put together. Apex Piping was responsible for most of the unique views and access that I achieved while photographing. They arrived with the Eagles and a brand new crane with an American Eagle painted on it. Their […]
