Amy McDonald and Pam Nichols brought their second flight into the World War II Memorial. It was a cast of characters. Francis Phelps (below center), a Navy veteran and her daughter posed for me in front of the Ovet Culp Hobby quote. It’s evident that the WWII Memorial designers worked hard to be “all- inclusive” and with the use of type, the bas reliefs and the pillars succeeded. There seemed to be a lot of Navy vets which I always like as my father was Navy. Henry Cooper (below left) is a survivor of Pearl Harbor and David Hamilton was telling these young Virginia Commonwealth students about his experiences. Typically Navy, you’ll notice he wasn’t talking to a bunch of guys.
Senator Dole of course is a big Army fan and always relates his experiences as a Kansas flatlander ending up in a Mountain Brigade. He was there today and spent an hour plus with the thirty five vets, their guardians and as he normally does, graciously posed for photographs with anyone who asked. We are now even in days spent on the Mall. I have to get some tropical gear as he always looks great and I am always in a state of melt down. There was however a cool breeze and I really find these gatherings inspiring so on we go….The pictures are posted on the website which you can access by clicking here.
