SPRING 2015

In case you weren’t at the Summit, I have posted my latest edition of HERDING CATS Vers. 3.0 on my website. If you are leading a group to the Memorial this year, I think it’s a valuable guide. I have provided a number of examples for reference. The Honor Flight Network Summit was spectacular with over three hundred of my favorite

Once again our co-founders Earl Morse and Jeff Miller are receiving much deserved recognition. Everyone knows the amount of time and effort they have spent on Honor Flight and I have had the privilege to be a spectator. This year, the Honor Flight Network will have flown over 150,000

Chicago Honor Flight: Precision Drill
Chicago Honor Flight: Precision Drill

Chicago Honor Flight arrived today with 93 veterans. As many of the guardians are from our elite corp of DC Volunteers, Chicago doesn’t need to fly out as many guardians. Mary Pettinato has a team of volunteers who are consistent and know the drill. Chicago’s local coordinators are Renda Overbo and Deb Stevens who make all the DC arrangements and coordinate all the volunteers.

Honor Flights Rock the WWII Memorial
Honor Flights Rock the WWII Memorial

As I walked along Homeland Drive, there were hundreds of veterans loading and unloading and the promise of more to come. As I walked into the Memorial Plaza, Rochester Honor Flihgh had a great jazz band playing and it was a spontaneous celebration of Spring.

WWII Memorial Exhibit at WIMSA
WWII Memorial Exhibit at WIMSA

WIMSA (WOMEN IN MILITARY SERVICE TO AMERICA) is probably the best-kept secret in Washington, DC. It is is one of the more significant yet invisible architectural triumphs in DC. It is so in perfectly attuned to the cemetery’s overall facade that it goes unnoticed. The interior of the Memorial has sweeping forty foot ceilings half of which are skylights which blow vast amounts of light into the interior, so much so that I am constantly surprised that the prints show no sign of fading

Honor Flight Book Ordering
Honor Flight Book Ordering

I will not be reprinting books this year and I am working out an arrangement with Amazon to fulfill all orders come 2015 They are far more efficient and are already taking care of all single book purchases. They may not be delivering your books by drone but they have made self-publishing practical. …which brings me to….

WWII Memorial in the “Snow”
WWII Memorial in the "Snow"

This is the first time I have been able to get down to the Memorial to catch the flakes falling and the fountains running at the same time. One of these days, the “Wall of Stars ” will be completed and the lights on. We’re making progress. It was an exceptionally quiet time and there were only a few people at the Memorial all taking pictures and all very cleverly staying out of each’s others pictures. Quite a nice experience.

Senator Bob Dole's 90th Birthday!

Happy 90th Birthday Senator Bob Dole! Senator Robert  Dole in front of the  WWII Memorial.  He is well known for his Congressional career, his run for the presidency and for lobbying for and raising the funds to build the WWII Memorial.  He is “adored” because of his frequent visits to the WWII Memorial to greet his fellow […]

Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is now available on the iBookstore! VE DAY: WWII Memorial
VE DAY: WWII Memorial

Several hundred people gathered at the WWII Memorial today to celebrate the 68th Anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day at the WWII Memorial. In attendance were the board of Directors of Friends of the WWII Memorial, reprsentatives Karen Curcurullo and Robin Owen of the National Park Service as well as an Honor Flight from Tucson Arizona. There was a moving re-enlistment ceremony and Holocaust survivors and WWII veterans placed wreaths in front of the Wall of Stars. The rains held off and in fact the weather was quite beautiful. The Memorial is a far better place with water than without. Great credit goes to Terry and the National Park Service for getting the fountains running.

Rocky Mountain Honor Flight
Rocky Mountain Honor Flight

Rocky Mountain Honor Flight. March 22, 2013. A blustery beautiful Spring morning greeted the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight lead by Mary Haddon. Although we had been down to the Memorial several times in the last week, it was good to see the Memorial populated by its natural inhabitants: WWII veterans and a group of students from the Air Force Academy who had volunteered to act as guardians. And as usual, there were several surprises. As the veterans were just to get off the bus, high school students lined the walkway to applaud the veterans and as we were leaving, a high school band

Panning for Gold

Just when you feel you’ve taken every possible angle and image of the WWII Memorial (and I’ve made my share!), you stumble across another view.  Yesterday, we were let out of the cab at the front of the Memorial and wandered into this area overlooking the Plaza. The images are available on the studio archive […]
