WWII veterans were at the WWII Memorial today not only from Honor Flight but from from groups ranging from a Pennsylvania bus group, a DC veteran with his family, to veterans who were POWs in a Polish prison during the war and forced to march 300 miles in mid-Winter. Honor Flight Tennessee, Alabama and South […]
These Buffalo Veterans were the first to meet with Senator Dole who took up a new post by the WWII Memorial entrance today to accomodate the crowds and there were crowds! It went very smoothly and much of the credit goes to Judy Lemmons and the ground crew for their excellent work. The leaders of […]
Pretty casual about saving the country, these “brothers-in-arms” share a bond that goes beyond states, politics, religion, etc…and it’s deep. They survived the worst of times, came back, started families and businesses and whether they like it or not, paved the way for “rock and roll!” Photos from today can be found at http://srbphoto.zenfolio.com. Veterans Groups […]
Seth Watkins, Attorney, Patent Lawyer and photographer (and oh yeah…husband to Marion Watkins, Senator Dole’s attorney) joined us today at the WWII Memorial after a long struggle with an important appeal he is doing pro bono. He’s an expensive volunteer photographer and given his degrees in Law and Mechanical engineering, I’ve found that he’s got […]
Today, there were over 1000 veterans, guardians, members of Honor Flight, the Rotary of New Hampshire…citizens, soldiers, marines, navy, coast guard, etc at the WWII Memorial….and I pass this note on from Judy Lemmons Honor Flight’s unsung hero, flight coordinator and all around good friend and advisor. Without her, we’d be wandering all around the […]
Pam Nichols of Honor Flight Birmingham reports this Tuesday that Honor Flight Birmingham swung through DC with 40 Honor Flight veterans. They were greeted by Congressman Robert Aderholt (RHaleyville) who welcomed the Blount county veterans at the WWII Memorial. Honor Flight Birmingham will be featured on newscast by CBS. On October 7, Honor Flight Birmingham honored another group of 43 central Alabama WWII veterans by flying them to the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C. This was the forth flight of 2008 for the Birmingham program. This flight was added late in […]
Photos are available at Ohio was the first group to arrive led by Susan Barr These George Washington ladies were on hand to meet the Louisiana Flight and kept Senator Dole and a few vets amused for a bit. As Senator Dole pointed to the young ladies, he said to the vets “Remember!!!”. Chris Cosich(above) […]
Photos are available at October 4th was a most successful day as 350 veterans plus 125 guardians visited the WWII Memorial through Honor Flight. Michigan, Alabama, Dayton, Ohio, Long Island, New York, Columbus and Louisiana all had a perfect Fall day to experience the Memorial. Diane Sinclair and Lona, our two volunteer team leaders, are […]
Senator Dole has missed a very few Honor Flights and always makes up for his absences with “multi-tasking.” Today (and this has happened before) a woman walked up to Senator Dole and asked him to take a phone call. It was classic Bob Dole. He got on the phone and chatted for a minute or […]
Diane Sinclair (left top_ continues to bring on new volunteers to work both the tent area and the South Portico where some of our distinguished guests tend to hang out at the WWII Memorial. Standing with her are Capt Lindsey Willhardt, Cindy Becker, Peg _______ , Jen Meyers while the front row is Jessica Moran and […]
Dee Pakulski, of Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio, had a nice small flight of 28 veterans and fourteen guardians who had a fine little ceremony by the Ohio pillar before dispersing to hear Earl Morse’s enthusiastic talk about the Memorials. When he stops transporting veterans, he might want to join the Guild of Tour Guides! […]
Stan Cass and the Honor Flight Northern Colorado group started their first Honor Flights with a bang bringing in two hundred and tweleve veterans and 95 guardians to the World War II Memorial. The two planes got off the ground a bit late but they arrived at the BWI Hilton about 8:30 to hear to get a […]
Congressman Jerry Moran of Kansas sponsored a nice little piece of legislation yesterday: H.RES.1287 Title: Commending the Honor Flight Network, its volunteers, and donors, for enabling World War II veterans to travel to our Nation’s capital to see the World War II Memorial created in their honor. It was co-sponsored by thirty other Congressman and passed unanimously. Congressman Moran’s father Ray […]
Congressman Steve Buyer who is on the joint House and Senate Veterans oversight committee met the Indiana group at the World War II Memorial as he always does. He’s an interesting guy who makes sure that Veterans groups toe the line and get some of the money back to veterans. I’ve seen him tackle some of the […]
As George Kerestes and I wandered through the crowds at the World War II Memorial today, he said “why that looks like General George Casey>” and sure enough, there he was with his family and no security chatting up veterans and getting ready to go a service across 17th Street for Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan veterans. And […]
John Anderson of Canton, Ohio had a very elaborate book of photos, news articles and personalities that he had encountered during his time in Europe…including a spell at the Battle of the Bulge. It was beautifully done and the kind of piece that the Library of Congress is beginning to collect. If you know any […]
My book still isn’t on display at the World War II Memorial but today the next best thing…. the Honor Flight RV driven by President Jim McLaughlin… was on-site. There are at least twenty of my photos on the RV and my name and website will be on the back bumper. Now that my friends […]
Four Honor Flight groups (Cleveland,Chicago, Iowa, Missouri) came in as did two surprise buses from West Virginia and Pennsylvania who were transporting Veterans to the World War II Memorial but aren’t part of Honor Flight. They will be able to download their pictures as well at the September 17, 2008 photo site. Senator Harken of Iowa joined […]

The photographs from yesterday are on the book site. One of the interesting aspects of the […]
Sens. Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin from Iowa and Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska spoke with the men about the importance of service to their country and the sacrifices they had made at the World War II Memorial. Former Director of the VA Jim Nicolson was there and Senator Dole, despite a trip to Vermont […]
The first thing people ask at the World War II Memorial is where they can get some more information besides the little pamphlet. I am not the only person behind the movment to make the “building” South of the Memorial capable of selling a few interpretive items. These items are what the NPS likes to […]
Chicago, Cleveland and Northwest Ohio arrived at the World War II Memorial today with appoximaely 150 vets and 100 guardians. It was a breezy 82 degrees and Senator Dole was on hand to greet the vets as were Jeff Miller and Earl Morse. Mary Pettinato of Chicago is shown here “reunited” with her veteran. The […]
