On October 7, Honor Flight Birmingham honored another group of 43 central Alabama WWII veterans by flying them to the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C. This was the forth flight of 2008 for the Birmingham program. This flight was added late in the 2008 season when citizens of Blount County raised over $30,000 which was donated to the Birmingham program thru a restricted grant for veterans of Blount County. This group of veterans represents all aspects of WWII: Jessie Holt was a marine on Okinawa and Pele lieu; Billy Gamble served on a Navy submarine; Bert Goodwin was part of the Army Air Corps 450th bomb group; Hoyt Barron served in Patton’s third Army; George Cuzzort was on the beach at Iwo Jima when the flag was raised on the island; and both Aaron Allison and Richard Childress served with Army combat troops in the Battle of the Bulge where Richard Childress was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war. The veterans will be welcome at the memorial by Congressman Robert Aderholt.Don Cuzzort who is a pilot with Southwest Airlines arranged to have the flight from Birmingham to Baltimore as a surprise to his father, WWII veteran George Cuzzort. He also traveled with the Birmingham group to the memorial. Honor Flight is featured in Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial book.
