Ray Kaskey is the internationally renowned sculptor who created the eagles, the bas reliefs, the ropes that join the columns, the water grates, the flagpoles and every piece of bronze in the WWII Memorial.
Prior to the WWII Memorial, he was most famous for his statue “Portlandia.” He was chosen for this project not only because of his classical style but also for the engineering skill he had shown in prior sculptural projects. Each set of four eagles holding the laurel wreath weighs 90,000 pounds. The design was approved over a ten year period. His wife Sherry was my studio mate for five or six years and it was her constant optimism that kept me fresh while this project was going on.
