Horsing around…

Thirty years ago, I did a story for National Geographic “Kids Magazine” about how they trained the National Park Service horses to work so closely and safely with people. The horses will put up with just about anything including fireworks underneath them, loud noises, sudden noises, explosions, traffic, riots, and are trained in the stables in Rock Creek Park.  We had a great time and the story ran. That story turned into another story on National Park Service Police helicopters and so on and on….. Over the years, I have always held the National Park Service Police in high regard as they are fair and equitable to press photographers in extreme situations.  And in my time in DC, I’ve had the pleasure to work in a lot of extreme situations…..  News photography in DC is a specialized subject!!!

Today, Jim Tayon, Earl Morse and I were shooting the breeze with Officer Kenneth M. Donovan (yeah…the guy on the horse!) and it turns out, he remembered the story because he was in it.  Memory Speak!!!  His father Robert E. Donovan was there and coincidentally was a parachutist in an offshoot regiment of the 82nd Airborne who was dropped one time at 180 feet.  He admitted that it was a close call among many.  So once again, hanging about the WWII Memorial proved that DC is really a small town. Ken is retiring this year after 38 years of riding around the Mall. He admitted that it’s been a dream assignment and I look forward to seeing more of him this Summer.
Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is a 120 page full color photographic book on the WWII Memorial.
