Today, Senator Robert Dole received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Kansas. Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little flew to DC for the day to present him with this honor. A select group of friends and colleagues were gathered to watch “the new Dr. Dole” receive this honor.
It’s been ten years since I began the WWII Memorial project and I am delighted
Faye Wisely was the first person I ever contacted about Honor Flight. No one was quite sure of how to go about accomplishing the task of moving all those vets. She pointed me to Earl Morse who was still working it out with Jeff Miller over the dinner table.
While visiting the WWII Memorial, a veteran from North West Ohio Honor Flight contemplates FDR’s words on Pearl Harbor. It is interesting that the religious right insists that Washingtonians omitted any reference to the creator as if we have nothing to do but remove text when in fact, the quote was at the end of […]
Chicago, Arizona, Columbia and Myrtle Beach, SC and North West Ohio Honor Flights were in town today as was Jim McLaughlin, President of Honor Flight and Susan Barr traveling with Arizona. The predicted stormy weather held off all day and other than a bit of humidity, my trip to the Memorial was absolute karma– […]
I am new to the world of Honor Flight. Before coming to work with Stephen, I was completely unaware of this quite remarkable undertaking of flying WWII veterans from around the nation to visit their memorial. Today was the second time that I was fortunate enough to witness this celebration of our veterans for their […]
A beautiful day of photography on the Bay. and a few photos for the Tidewater project. Herrington Harbour is just getting ready for the season and looks spectacularly fresh. The Osprey have set up their nests in the channel and the ducks have temporarily taken over the pool. Next weekend, they’ll have some competition.
Just as I had herded all the Canton Akron cats into my frame, along came Mrs. Dole to throw some light on the image. She has taken over for Senator Dole and her presence is as large as his. She is ever gracious and has a empathy with people that is stunning to experience. We […]
My carefully planned photograph of the 200 person Canton Akron Honor Flight went off without a hitch. I was adding and subtracting people to make them fit into the frame of my “not wide enough” lens! Worked like a charm! The Smuckers Corporation sponsored two Honor Flights so far. And I’m going to be drinking […]
Mary Haddon of Rocky Mountain Honor Flight was at the WWII Memorial with about thirty veterans and their guardians. The weather was DC at its best and promised to continue for the weekend which is supposed to be jam-packed with flights. The veteran on the left was celebrating his 93rd birthday. You can see more […]
Jane Howitt began working with me a couple of months ago and studio productivity has skyrocketed. She oversaw the revision of the WWII Memorial book through its final stages and is now deep into the revision of the DC PHOTO BOOK. She is also working on a series of posters which we soon hope to […]
The Cherry Blossom Festival has been extended this year to accommodate a record 2 million visitors. I’ll be down at the Cherry Blossom Festival Welcome area signing WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall and DC PHOTO BOOK: An Insider’s View for the National Park Service. Eastern National, an educational affiliate of the Park Service will have a tent […]
The revised WWII Memorial book will be 28 pages thicker with a gloss 140 lb stock on the cover. Sculptor Ray Kaskey’s use of the “lost wax” process is examined in more detail and a new section called a “A Living MemoriaL” documents the day-to-day activities that make this Memorial so unique. Click on a […]
120 Honor Flight leaders from probably thirty states gathered at the BWI Hilton this weekend to discuss the flight procedures, health issues, safety, public awareness and fund raising and prepare begin another season of bringing WWII Veterans to DC. It was great meeting people who are interested in service. It does make you feel […]
Sculptor Ray Kaskey who sculpted the the WWII Memorial elements just completed assignments for the “International Brotherhood of Teamsters” and the “International Union of Operating Engineers.” I added twelve pages to the site and updated the “Commissions” page. I designed the site two years ago in Dreamweaver and still think it’s an elegant piece of code.

Forty two of my images will be displayed this month at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. I will be speaking on photographing the Bay on January 26th and the opening reception will be January 27th. WHAT’S UP MAGAZINE gave the TIDEWATER: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs January 26th lecture and January 27th reception at the Annapolis Maritime Museum a nice write up and I’d like to thank Elyse Exposito for the nice mention.

Barcelona was a visual feast and there was no imaging restraint possible! I have just finished doing a preliminary edit using Lightroom. While I haven’t had much experience with LR, i found it satisfying to take these gritty green fluorescent night shots and turn them into relatively interesting color or lack of. The choice of […]
My sunday riverfront odyssey turned into a triple header. The Georgetown Waterfront has been enhanced on the East with the House of Sweden’s clean, green and hip design and our new park on the West. For more pictures of Washington, DC, check out DC PHOTO BOOK: An Insider’s View of Washington, DC
I must have fifty discreet “views” of the Lincoln but it seems there is always another. Look for it in the upcoming revised edition of DC PHOTO BOOK: An Insider’s View of Washington, DC
Scouting an architectural project along the Potomac, I realized I have only been on the River once before in my three decades in DC! I jumped on the Riverfront Cruse which was just arriving and it turned out to be the last ride of the season! As I got on, I recognized Captain Bob […]
