To the sounds of a bagpipe, the twenty buses offloaded seven hundred veterans, one hundred volunteers and there were ceremonies for every state represented and always, a rembrance for those who didn’t get the opportunity to make the trip. Joyce Tarantino and her ground crew arranged for groups of soldiers to greet the vets at the airports and NBC, the WHNPA, and several other crews and still photographers were on hand to document a fabulous day.
For me, it was an opportunity to catch up with everyone from Honor Flight. Susan Barr, Earl, Margaret, big Earl, Dave Bauer, Jeff Miller and son and Heidi Elswick and her son Kyle. I’ve been concentrating on photographing portraits of the veterans and there’s a wealth of material to be had. Honor Flight Vets and their families can download the images on the WWII Memorial Photographic site for free.
