This was the scene from the helm this weekend as we took advantage of the light winds to finish up the season. I’ve been dropping off cases of “Tidewater” at the various marinas we visit on our explorations of the Chesapeake.
We had some bad weather forecast today in DC and while it was gray, the rains held off while Arizona, New Mexico and Chicago were at the Memorial. Jim McLoughlin and Susan Barr are in town for a few days supervising the variety of flights that are arriving. Honor Flight is a phenomena…and phenomenally successful. […]
Senators Robert and Elizabeth Dole and General Colin Powell greet 750 WWII Veterans who visited the WWII Memorial this last Saturday. I took a few pictures but more importantly, I directed bus traffic! The pictures are available for free download to veterans and their families.

Lona Ichikawa has taken on a new role with Heroes’ Welcome the organization that traditionally welcomes WWII Veterans to the BWI, Reagan and Dulles Airports. They are transporting their first bus trip from Northern Virginia. The buses depart from American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax on October 2, 2011. If you would like to be a […]

Senators Dole (Robert and Elizabeth) and Senator Richard Burr were on hand to greet the troops from North Carolina, Arizona and Cleveland. George Kerestes and Al Doehring showed up as well as Susan Barr. It was quite a […]
After a scorching summer and a week of torrential rain, it was a pleasure to slip by the WWII Memorial this morning. As I strolled towards the Pacific entrance, I ran into Jim McLoughlin, President of Honor Flight. He’s on a trip every three weeks in addition to supervising Honor Flight’s all over the country. […]
Upriver from the House of Sweden. If you are familiar with my publications, you know that I am always in search of unique and grand views of DC. It’s the most beautiful of the great cities and I’ve found you can while away 35 plus years photographing it. If you are not familiar with DC PHOTO […]
VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945 from Richard Sullivan on Vimeo. This video was recently found and is represented to be VJ Day in Honolulu. Imagine the celebration…no…SEE the celebration in this short piece. We are gathering additional stills and video for our ongoing publications of “WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall.”
Senators Robert and Elizabeth Dole invited 100 members of “Wounded Warriors”from Walter Reed Hospital to Senator Robert Dole’s 88th birthday party this July 22nd. The Doles have been regularly taking wounded soldiers and their families out for a “night on the town.” For Senator Dole’s 88th Birthday, they invited them to their Washington home. The Doles […]
Honor Flight Chicago visited the WWII Memorial in the blistering heat. Wisely staying on the buses when possible, they managed to put together a moving ceremony at the WWII Memorial. Working with Honor Flight Chicago’s 800 volunteer army, this print will be waiting for the veterans when they arrive at the airport this evening. Every […]
This image was taken about a month ago. As I was wondering along the Tidal Basin on the way to the WWII Memorial, MLK was exposed! It looks to be a beautiful memorial and I am looking forward to photographing it more thoroughly when it opens this August 28th.
L’Escargot, now the nicest Bristol 32 on the Chesapeake Bay, is in the water and going fast (for a Bristol 32). I’d like to thank everyone who coordinated their efforts to get the boat through the yard: Buster Phipps for his innovative hatches and woodwork, Osprey Marine Composites for a smooth bottom and structural […]
I’ve been driving down to the Eastern Shore to get Tidewater books out to Museums and bookstores and took some time out to visit with the Cutts brothers who were just finishing up the rigging one of their classic boats. And in the pool at Mears Marina found Margaret L. Anderson Rosenfeld whose autographed book “On […]
Captain Wade Murphy of the Rebecca Ruark will be making “Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs” available on his daily tours for the Summer. The Rebecca Ruark is promiently featured in Tidewater.
I got a schedule of Honor Flights yesterday from Glenn Anderson who is running the welcoming committee at BWI airport. His devotion and the devotion of his volunteers is absolutely amazing. This week, there were ten flights coming in and out of BWI almost everyday of the week as Honor Flight organizers deal with charter […]
I’ve just started to “organize” the last decade into one site and am using a new facebook page to distribute information. Please visit and “like” any one of my recent projects.
Mary Pettinato rolled into the WWII Memorial this afternoon with her volunteers both from Chicago and the local group headed by Renda traveled to the WWII Memorial, the Lincoln and finally to the Iwo Jima Memorial. Due to other committments, I haven’t been down to the Memorial other than in passing. I finally had some spare […]
These images are discounted significantly and will be available for a month. They are printed on an extraordinarily beautiful 12″ x 18″ inch metallic paper and are archival in quality.
The green clad Chicago troops arrived in force and with great dispatch began to map out an elaborate ceremony with the Honor Guard. It was a beautiful sight and I urge you to visit the Photo Gallery to see multiple views. Honor Flight is featured in the Jewel of the Mall: WWII Memorial book
For the last two years, I’ve gotten book orders from the Iowa Hyvee for Honor Flights who I haven’t had a chance to meet but today Iowa was here at the World War II Memorial. And “I’m going shop at Hyvee!” even if they don’t have any stores in the DC area. I think it’s […]
Honor Flight has become such a staple in DC that I don’t bother with schedules but just head down to the World War II Memorial almost any day of the week. My first “photo” today was Margaret Morse, mother of founder Earl. She and Earl Senior were substituting for Earl Junior who is off in […]
