Just prior to the opening of the WWII Memorial, I worked for a month on a large advertising supplement for the Washington Post Magazine. I had the opportunity to photograph a few of the veterans who testified before Congress and influenced the legislation to finally construct the Memorial. One of them was Stan Wojtusik (upper […]
I took a few hours to put together a twenty-six page book of 200 images selected from the 5000 taken last year at the WWII Memorial. It’s a nice selection and on this cold February day in DC makes me look forward to the first visitors to the Memorial this year. You can see the […]
The WWII Memorial has become a place where people can channel their love and grief. Doing the “Jewel of the Mall” book has brought me some beautiful letters… and I thought I would share this one with you and remind you that you should make sure the veterans in your town are registered with […]
Dorothy Mary (Sudomir) Budacki passed away this Fall. I had the chance to meet her and her daughter, Denise Duke (both in Navy uniform) at the World War II Memorial in November of 2007. We exchanged some pictures and letters over the past year and this is one of my favorite images. Her daughter Denise wrote: […]
Washington, DC will soon be abuzz with inauguration activity. The town is hopping with visitors and students on Winter Break. Construction is going on from the Capitol to the White House. If the crowds are anything like predicted, it will be interesting to see how the whole event plays. DC is capable of handling some enormous crowds but […]
Senator Dole, Chuck Hegel (new Secretary of Health?), Jeff Fortenberry and _____(help me out here) joined together to welcome these Wisconsin, Nebraska and Albany veterans on a cold but beautifully breezy day. Unlike Summer, people were staking out those nice sunny spots from which to look around the WWII Memorial. You can just begin to […]
Kansas and Georgia arrived to cloudy but tolerably comfortable weather and as the Kansas group formed up for the “most organized picture of the year”, Senator Dole arrived. After we made the group picture, Senator Dole talked about the fact that the WWII Memorial was built by private contributions and that the government had nothing […]
100 Yards from Vietnam Memorial I have been asking the National Park Service to open the building at the WWII Memorial to a limited and tasteful selection of interpretive and appropriate WWII books. Their response to date: “…we are deliberate in our decision making process with respect to how to appropriately interpret any and all […]
Birmingham, AL On Wednesday, November 5 Honor Flight Birmingham took to the skies for the final flight in 2008. This was the fifth flight of 2008 for the Birmingham program started by Pam Nichols and Amy McDonald. The group included 34 veterans, two-thirdsof which were Navy veterans. They were warmly greeted to cheers and tears at Baltimore International Airport […]
General Colin Powell visited today with six Honor Flight hubs at the WWII Memorial today. Among them were Asheville/ Buncobe County, Louisiana Honor Air, Honor Flight Columbus, Quad City, Iowa, Honor Flight Michigan, and Honor Flight Dayton for a total of 600 veterans. General Powell made short work of shaking hands with everyone and photographer […]
I just set up a Cafe Press website where you can order an endless supply of WWII Memorial merchandise from t-shirts, cups, custom cards, etc. Have a look. The prices are reasonable and the quality of their materials are good. I shop online and I know what everyone’s getting for Christmas!! Re the Jewel of […]
Jim McLaughlin, President of Honor Flight, lead an intrepid group of RV’s from Ohio to Washington. They seemed like it was a relaxing trip and I expect we will see more of the RV groups. Tax-wise, it’s a great way to get to Washington!!! CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS Honor Flight is featured in Jewel of […]
http://srbphoto.zenfolio.com/p910567264 Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial is a 120 page full color photographic book on the WWII Memorial.
Bobbi and Bill Richards of Columbus, Ohio are without doubt the most active Honor Flight recently and I see them almost every week and every week, they organize something with school children out of their area. Accompanied by Susan Barr, they brought in yet another plane load and plan to have two plane loads in […]
Seth Watkins parents, Bob and Gail Watkins joined us in the photo fray today at the World War II Memorial, as they were visiting from my home state, New York. The photo crew has been trying to not only get the group photo but also as you can see, Seth and Marion and Cary are […]
What do our veterans do when they leave the WWII Memorial? Why they meet cute girls at the Lincoln? I had an assignment which prevented me from getting to the WWII Memorial this AM so I drove by the Lincoln afterwards and lo and behold, Florida’ s veterans were looking pretty comfortable as they […]
As I mentioned last week, I am out of books but I am delighted to report that the image and design files have been submitted to the press and 15000 new copies of the WWII Memorial book will be delivered mid-January. I have selected a new printer and changed out a few pictures and […]
WWII veterans were at the WWII Memorial today not only from Honor Flight but from from groups ranging from a Pennsylvania bus group, a DC veteran with his family, to veterans who were POWs in a Polish prison during the war and forced to march 300 miles in mid-Winter. Honor Flight Tennessee, Alabama and South […]
These Buffalo Veterans were the first to meet with Senator Dole who took up a new post by the WWII Memorial entrance today to accomodate the crowds and there were crowds! It went very smoothly and much of the credit goes to Judy Lemmons and the ground crew for their excellent work. The leaders of […]
Pretty casual about saving the country, these “brothers-in-arms” share a bond that goes beyond states, politics, religion, etc…and it’s deep. They survived the worst of times, came back, started families and businesses and whether they like it or not, paved the way for “rock and roll!” Photos from today can be found at http://srbphoto.zenfolio.com. Veterans Groups […]
Seth Watkins, Attorney, Patent Lawyer and photographer (and oh yeah…husband to Marion Watkins, Senator Dole’s attorney) joined us today at the WWII Memorial after a long struggle with an important appeal he is doing pro bono. He’s an expensive volunteer photographer and given his degrees in Law and Mechanical engineering, I’ve found that he’s got […]
Pam Nichols of Honor Flight Birmingham reports this Tuesday that Honor Flight Birmingham swung through DC with 40 Honor Flight veterans. They were greeted by Congressman Robert Aderholt (RHaleyville) who welcomed the Blount county veterans at the WWII Memorial. Honor Flight Birmingham will be featured on newscast by CBS. On October 7, Honor Flight Birmingham honored another group of 43 central Alabama WWII veterans by flying them to the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C. This was the forth flight of 2008 for the Birmingham program. This flight was added late in […]
Behind this wall at Arlington Cemetery is the Women in Military Service to American Museum often overlooked because of it’s position just below Lee House. The architects essentially dug behind the retaining wall of the cemetery and put in the most astonishingly beautiful museum in the city. Unfortunately, they can’t get a sign out of […]
My photography has taken on a new mobility. Take a look at the pictures of Earl Morse’s new RV which was donated to Honor Flight. “Pimp My Ride, Dude!!!” In my wildest dreams, I never thought of my photographs on wheels. I can’t wait for the Park Service to see it. If only I could […]
