Susan Barr is the Public Relations Director for Honor Flight and an emergency room nurse and mother of two. Unflappable and ever-observant, I normally find her standing back, talking constantly on a headset to coordinate events while monitoring the health and hydration of every person involved in an Honor Flight.
She’s up until midnight every night working on Honor Flight affairs and says of her involvement with Honor Flight: “….. You need to find the number for your closest VSO, and discuss this with your families before making the commitment. It is very time consuming, but also just as rewarding. Your life and the Veterans will never be the same. I can’t even begin to tell you the ripple effect of the good that is shared from these trips. God Bless our Soldiers and Sailors and God Bless America….”
“The Memorial Registry picture I am holding is of my Uncle Lewie Hurd. I never met him as he died test piloting a Helldiver 3 days before shipping out to WWII. He is MIA/KIA. Someday we will have a memorial for him as they are finding these relics all the time and it will just be a matter of time for his. Would love to have his dog tags or something like that. I have met a few who knew him. He was engaged and his fiance was still a big part of our family even after she married someone else.”
It’s “Susan Barr” day by popular decree. To celebrate, she’s working on the farm!!!
Honor Flight is featured in Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial book.
