Running Out of Time-Honor Flight

Meredith Darlington is running two Marathons to raise money for the Honor Flight network. The effort is in honor of her grandfather Edgar Sawyer Chase Meredith and she is doing it through her page on “Firstgiving.com”.

Grandfather, Honor Flight volunteer
She makes an interesting point:

During each mile I will run, we will lose another 45 WWII veterans. By the end of the race, 180 will be gone, their stories gone with them. Please join with me to raise money for the Honor Flight Network to send them to see their memorial in Washington D.C.  Time is not on their side.  Some gave all, surely ALL of us can give some!

Recently, I have heard from several flight leaders that WWII Veterans are increasingly in need of wheelchairs and so our time is short.  While we must redouble our efforts, congratulate yourselves on the number of veterans who have had the opportunity to see the WWII Memorial. This is an amazing adventure in volunteerism and if I had to pick the people I’d like to be in long-term community with, it would be all of you Honor Flight volunteers.  Because I have the chance to deal with so many of you, the experience is all that much more meaningful.

Tracy Briggs in her post on Volunteerism said that  “To say that it’s been life-changing also sounds like a cliche but it’s not an overstatement. I went into this project knowing very little about these veterans. I knew what I knew about the war from history class and Hollywood. But I didn’t know the stories of the men who won the war: The soft spoken Minnesota farm boy who stayed behind with a buddy during the Battle of the Bulge because ‘nobody should die alone”.

Honor Flight is featured in Jewel of the Mall: World War II Memorial book.
